Interview with Michael Varlet

Before Nightfall Michael Varlet
Can you detail how you came up with the name ‘Before Nightfall’ and what it was that inspired you to begin your metal journey?

We were watching TV and a movie starring Johnny Depp called 'Before Night Falls' came on and we thought it would make a great band name!

How would you describe your music to someone who has never heard you before? And how do you think your closest relative might describe your music?

We play fast, neo-classical melodic death metal with symphonic elements, with lots of solos and screaming.

I'm not that close with my relatives so I don't really know how they'd explain it. They'd probably say something along the lines of, 'Michael plays in this band with screaming in it'

Could you please detail what kind of costs went into creating and releasing your latest album, ‘Smiling At Your Sorrow’?

We recorded and mixed the album ourselves, so the costs were very minimal. We only had to pay Plec at Panic Room Mastering and the actual printing of the album. We also sell the album ourselves online and at shows.

What would be your most memorable gig to date and why?

I don't really have a most memorable show. They all sort of blend after a while and being on stage just seems like one of those things you do. I still absolutely love it, but watching other bands play live is much more memorable for me. I think after we play the show supporting Eluveitie that might become my most memorable because I am really looking forward to that one!

Which song do you prefer to play and which do you think your fans prefer and why?

I like playing ‘Blood For Two’ because it's fun to play on guitar while screaming and also because there's a lot of swearing in it, haha.

I think the fans like ‘Beneath The Smile’ the most - mainly because it's the only song we have a film clip for at the moment.

What can you tell us about the creation of the music video for ‘Beneath The Smile’?

We chose ‘Beneath The Smile’ because it was the song that received the best response from our fans and we also felt that it showcased our music the best. We spent about 13 hours on set, with one camera, doing multiple takes. It was a great learning experience and we can't wait to bring out another clip!

What do you tend to base your lyrics on and could you quote your favourite verse?

Well, the whole album is a novel and it tells a story about a killer, his wife and his brother. It explores murder, psychosis, love and hate through gruesome, graphic lyrics.

Most bands tell me metal has no money in it, so what do you all do besides playing in the band in order to earn your living?

I work at a Liquor store in Brisbane City as well as teach guitar. I have been teaching for about five or six years now and still love doing it.

What brand of instruments are you using and how did any endorsements come about?

We use / endorse the use of Jackson Guitars. Our endorsement came about when we emailed the Jackson Representative with a plan to give away a free Jackson Guitar after we got 1,000 likes on Facebook. I'm not sure if this is what helped with the endorsement or not but either way, we're endorsed now.

Let’s pretend you were creating a tour survival guide. What would be your top three tips for surviving a long tour with the band?

1. Plenty of fast food for hungry musos

2. Deodorant! If we are going to be around each other 24/7

3. Be prepared for car troubles / breakdowns etc.

What kind of barriers or restrictions do you think exist within the Australian metal scene? And how do you think we can improve things overall?

Well I know there are a lot of promoters working to make the scene bigger and better. One of the biggest restrictions for the metal scene at the moment, I think, is venues. There seems to be a lot closing down all over the country and it's making it harder to put on shows.

What have been some of the more bizarre signings you’ve had or the most bizarre experiences in general during your time with the band?

We usually do signings at All Ages shows because the younger fans are always keen to get something signed.  Photos, phones, shoes, boobs, faces, stomachs and arms are the most normal places but you do get the odd object every now and then though.

Have you ever had any mystical experiences?

Not any that didn't involve intoxication of some sort.
