Interview with Jason PC
Since August 1991, Blood Duster have been tearing up the stages with their fuck you attitude and grindcore atrocities. With a huge list of releases under their belt and their fair share of controversy and interesting stage antics, a new wave of bastardism has been born under the name, 'Bastard Fest'. This festival graces cities throughout Australia and New Zealand. It's here you can either discover or rediscover Blood Duster for yourself. For some further insight into these gore loving blokes, please continue to read my introductory interview with Jason from Blood Duster.
"I'm Jason. I play bass, I write the lyrics and am generally known as the mouthpiece / asshole for
interviews and shit like that. The others are Tony Lee Roth - Vokills, Matty Lowpants - Guitarded,
Beltsy on the other Guitar and Dave Taxation Forms is the Drummer."
How did you come about obtaining the band name?
We chose from a list of potential band names and the one we liked we chose.
How would you describe your music to someone who has never heard you before?
We play rock and grindcore with punk rock sensibilities with an attitude of go fuck yourself throughout.
What one thing do you feel sets you apart from the rest in this genre?
Nothing, we are generic as dogshit.
I understand you have been working on a new album. What can you tell us about this new release? Is there any particular message you are trying to relay to your audience with this album?
That we fucking hate almost everyone! We have been doing this for 20 years and built a lot of relationships; some really good ones and some shitty ones. Now we are going through those relationships and deciding what ones are worth keeping and we are burning bridges wherever we can. Some bands claim to not give a fuck, we actually don't. Now we’re in the unique position to be able to tell everyone to fuck off.
Which label, if any, have you produced this album through? Do you think record companies actually make the recording process any easier?
Yes, they used to give you money to be able to create things worth a shit. Sure some were rip offs and dirty dealings were abound but most albums over the last 50 years have had a label hand in there somewhere. Not many albums worth listening to have been made without some form of help from a label. I know it sounds shit but it’s true. People who hurrah the end of the recording industry are generally outside the industry and think every band earns a million dollars. Most, in reality, don't. The ones that used to get a few grand to make a record are now broke and that in turn is leading them to not even bother. What could be better than being able to afford to take the time to create some art? Nothing, that’s what. Artists now do it part time at best as it’s just not worth going without a roof over your head so some dumb fuck can download all you create for free while they are at their chosen day job.

Any plans for a music video? And, if applicable, which is your favourite video thus far?
David Lee Roth makes the best music videos. I like his ‘Yankee Rose’ video. It’s very colourful. That’s my favourite video. We will be making our own epic video very soon.
When you go into recording mode, do you find it easy or challenging?
Piece of piss. I love it!
Who’s responsible for the bands artwork?
We hate logos and all that shit. We generally don't like art at all, although this album’s art will be handled by Rowan from Extortion.
How hard has it been to get to this point?
We are talking about 20 years of shit here… my hands would get tired typing all that.
Where does your main fan base / support tend to lie?
Nope, not really. There is one place in Germany that I never want to go back to. I think it was called Bell?! Good people but the drink with banana syrup in the beer, everyone is 11 ft tall and the mixing desk was in like a tree in the middle of the venue… also we couldn't actually turn our amps above one as they were too loud.
Can you recall a favourite venue?
The ones that make sure the rider is ready without a fucking argument about it. They are my favourite.
What are some of your favourite Australian acts? And have you had the chance to play alongside them?
AC/DC and no we haven't. We've played with everyone; generally people are nice and treat us well. Celibate Rifles were assholes to us once at a show, but that was about 15 years ago so we've let that go.
After a live performance do you tend to go and hang out with the fans or do you prefer to keep to yourself?
I like to get pissed with everyone before and after. There is actually no distinction between us and them. That kind of shit is rockstar behaviour. We don't go for that.
What would be your most memorable gig / performance to date?
Too many! Maybe the first obscene extreme or the Big Day Out tour we did. Or the Metal For The Brain where I lost my pants and suffered a concussion. That was pretty good.
Have you got a favourite song you like to play? And is there one in particular your fans seem to prefer?
They all like ‘Northcote’. I fucking hate that song. That and ‘Drink Fight Fuck’ seem to be the faves. I like our slow noisy record that was part of a triple album ‘Slow And Long In A’ but no one yells out for a half hour drone track.
You are about to thrash out at Bastardfest in Brisbane, Sydney, Perth, Hobart and Adelaide throughout September - October. What can the audience expect to experience from you on this tour?
Good bands and good atmosphere; no ego bullshit. Just good Australian bastardy music by people who do it for the right reasons.
If you created your own metal festival, who would you prefer was playing alongside you and where would that be?
Well we did, Bastard Fest. It is exactly as I would like it to be. Nothing more, nothing less.
What kind of instruments do you use?
Ones with strings and skins and stuff generally. We don't have any endorsements, I don't think?! Dave might have a drum one with pearl and paiste or something. I don't know, I'm not really into that shit. I would rather just buy what I need and use that as opposed to getting something given to me and having to play it. Unless Gibson and Fender start giving out 70s guitars to endorsees, then I would reconsider my stance.
What have been some of the more bizarre signings you’ve had?
Tits, wooden legs, guys asses… You name it, we've signed it!
Where can people purchase your music and merchandise from?
Wherever good music is sold, that’s where you find us. Try www.bloodduster.com or something. Where do you even buy music nowadays besides online?
What was the main reason you chose this career path and has it turned out as expected?
Ha! Career path?! Blood duster was never going to be a career. It was at best a party, a prank or a joke even. If you’re into music as a career I can assure you that you would be one of the bands I personally don't like. Career music is boring at its very best.
Let’s pretend you were creating a tour survival guide. What would be your top three tips for surviving a long tour with the band?
Make sure you’re in a band with people you like and you’re doing it because you fucking love it. Any other reason and you’re going to be disappointed and break up.
What words of advice can you offer anyone looking to enter the music industry?
Don't take advice from people like us would be my advice.
Anything you'd like to add or say to your fans?
Buy us beer when you see us standing at a bar, we've generally come a long way and it’s the least you could do. Don't be an asshole and expect one in return either. Just put your hands in your pockets every now and then. Cheers for reading and I hope I haven't come off too nice in print. I really hate when that happens.
