Interview with Dave Slave
Tell us a little about yourself and the band name.
My name is David and I am mental. The name Doomed and Disgusting is a description of the audio horror I create. It's doomish and may be disgusting to religious people. I don't know how I came up with it. I just remember that it's the name I chose to tag my music!
How would you describe your music?
Sheer audio horror! Real evil not the pretend variety!
What one thing do you feel sets you apart from the rest in this genre?
Well I don't think I am in any specific genre. I don't even like calling Doomed and Disgusting Metal!
Discography:
Well I had a 7 inch to start... not bragging! Then there was a limited edition CD, 'Horror Soundtrax' which wasn't an official release. Then 'Satan's Nightmare' (mainly European release) and now 'Are You Possessed?' (American release).
How long did it take to record your latest material?
Two of the tracks on this mini CD are different versions of tracks that I had on Horror Soundtrax (limited release) and the other tracks were done a couple of years ago and have been waiting for me to get my shit together!
What is the inspiration behind your latest material?
The graveyard nightmares I've been experiencing for many years now! When I go to sleep I visit the dead and I have no control over it, so I recycle the creepy feelings into horror audio!
Tell us about your recent music video?
Well I have two videos finished and three more almost finished! Anyhow I have captured some extremely disturbing imagery of myself that even gives me the creeps! One of the tracks in particular, The Devil Delusion, is like an old 40's black and white Horror film except it really looks evil! It will be on youtube soon!
When you go into recording mode, do you find it easy or challenging?
I love recording. It is the only way I get stuff that's been sitting inside one of my brains out into a machine! It helps clear my head out for new stuff! So I find it as easy as doing a piss! What a relief!
Is there a particular market or country you are trying to reach?
Yes, the whole planet! Everyone will know who I am eventually. I know because I am doomed for succe$$!!
What kind of message are you trying to relay to your audience?
Give me all your money! Haha.. Well I don't think there has to be a strict message to audio horror art?! I can understand The Eagles or a normal band singing a message across to people, but what I am doing is art!
Eg: when you watch the news you expect a message, but when you watch The Addams Family you expect entertainment!
What have you got in store for 2008?
To be as creative as I've always been and look into finding a major film company with shit loads of money to take on a horror film idea! Otherwise, I might have to do it myself!
Who's responsible for the bands artwork?
Well Doomed and Disgusting is more photo's. I always create the concepts and get other people to help me when it comes to holding a camera or using a computer (Photoshop) which I am crap at.
How hard has it been to get to this point?
Everything is running smoothly!
Where does your main fan base / support tend to lie?
Well as you know I am a studio artist these days, and I think my audio horror is being played on CD players all over the globe.
What is your favourite venue?
The Marquee in Annandale, NSW but its gone now.
What are some of your favourite local acts? And have you had the chance to play alongside them?
I would like to play alongside Kylie Minoque because she's hot!
What would be your most memorable gig / performance to date?
All the Sadistik Exekution gigs!
Have you got a favourite song you like to play? And is there one in particular you've noticed your fans have started asking for?
Well as you know I've only played gigs with sad-ex, and I've noticed the fans liked our softest song ever (Sadistik Elektrokution) wimps!
If you were playing at a metal festival, who would you prefer was playing alongside you and where would that be?
Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath, Motley Crue, Judas Priest, and Motorhead, and that better be at the biggest venue possible, and I better be headlining or else!
What kind of instruments do you use? And have you done the 'rock star' thing yet and smashed any equipment?
I play anything that makes a noise, however on Doomed and Disgusting I play almost everything you hear, and yes I have done the 'rock star bass smashing thing' on national TV back in 1988 on Hey Hey Its Saturday which will also be on youtube asap!
Have you had many chances for signings?
I don't sign anything unless it says I get a million dollars, because I need money to buy a house!
Where can people purchase your music and merchandise from?
All decent record shops eg: JB Hi-Fi, Sanity etc, or Google, or Misanthropic enterprises.
The last time I interviewed you was for hailmetal.com and you were telling me about some interesting occurrences during recording. Can you tell our readers here about your ghostly recording and have you had any further esoteric encounters?
I don't know where to start?! I signed a guestbook at a site (all things metal) in Misouri and the girl at the site sent back her contact details and her landline number was exactly the same ten digit mobile number! One in ten billion combinations!!!
This isn't the same as when I've thought of my friend or mum who I haven't seen in ages and they've called up. That might be a one in a hundred thing!
Also, in 1985 I was at Coogee Beach in the evening and there was no one in the water
and I was waist high, and a wallet floated toward me and stopped at my waist. When I took it to a place where I could read the contents it turned out to be a good friend of mines wallet! Absolutely mind blowing! One in almost infinity!
All I can say is Doomed and Disgusting music contains a ghostly presence which seems to like hanging around the environment where the music is played!
Fame, fun or finance?
The fun and the money! Even though it doesn't happen.
What words of advice can you offer anyone looking to enter the music industry?
Make sure you have talent because 95% of things being released these days are done by every man and his dog and the real artists are diluted!
Anything you'd like to add or say to your fans?
Yes, you are all going to die!
